What is a YLC language class like? Signing up to start learning any new skill can be a terrifying experience. You may wish you could peek behind the scenes before you take the plunge. So, let’s answer some of your most common questions:
Who are the students who sign up to take YLC language classes?
Students decide to enroll in our classes for many different reasons. Some students began studying a language some years back, find themselves forgetting, and would like a refresher. Some students have a lifelong love of a particular culture and often travel to places where it is spoken. Some students need to communicate better with family members or in-laws. Some students know that they would be more effective at their job if they were able to communicate with others from a different background. Some of our students have ongoing business ties with foreign companies or markets. Some students have tried with an app, but realize that endless translations or drills or games isn’t the same as face-to-face communication with another human being.
Why do they come to us?
They know that we offer classes geared to getting them hitting the road and communicating quickly. They know that we offer targeted instruction by skilled professionals who also often interpret, translate and teach in more formal settings. They know that we offer an incredible price-to-value ratio for the quality instruction we provide. They prefer our innovative, student-centered methods and materials to other more structured settings that demand everything be done ‘their way’. They are looking for classes offered at times convenient for students, busy professionals, and workers with quirky schedules.
What do they get out of our classes?
Students get more than language from our classes. They meet new friends, open themselves up to new social opportunities. They find buddies for trivia night and partners for salsa dancing. They put their American Sign Language skills to work as an ally for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. They build bridges to others in their own workplace or neighborhood. Some even go traveling together! They become empowered with language!
What kinds of different classes do they take?
Some students enroll in our public classes, which are ten week sessions open to anyone and progressing by skill level. Some students opt for private classes to work on particular communicative skills, to prepare for an upcoming trip, or to refine their knowledge of certain structures. Some students sign up with or ask to be paired with a Study Buddy, offering them the best of both worlds: someone with whom to study and practice, but also a customizable, targeted experience at a guaranteed convenient time.
So, now the next questions are for you: Who do you think of when you read those descriptions above? Who do you know who would benefit from some quality, targeted, communicative language instruction? Could you even be the one who would benefit? Or maybe put another way, can you think of any way in which you wouldn’t benefit from knowing another language?
