Here in the United States, our school system is the gateway to a mystery land all its own. It comes with a unique culture, its own routines, and a long list of terms and acronyms that seem to change every few years.  Even parents who went through the U.S. system themselves can sometimes feel a little lost.  Most of what we once knew now looks so different.  If still familiar structures can disorient longtime residents, imagine how overwhelming it can be for parents who have only recently arrived in this country and are trying to understand an entirely new educational world.

Teachers and administrators don’t have to work very hard to imagine one of those families.  Education professionals see the uncertainty that many newcomer parents carry with them.  These families care deeply about their children’s education, but they may feel intimidated when they step into one of our school buildings for the first time. They worry about not understanding school procedures, missing important information, or misunderstanding conversations about academics or behavior.  Many fear that their English skills—or cultural differences they may not even recognize could cause them to make mistakes.  Teachers and administrators know that mishaps in communication can leave families feeling disengaged, and that ultimately impacts student achievement.

Your Language Connection is more than a translation service.  We work to help ease those fears and build strong, comfortable relationships between schools and families.  Our linguists and interpreters receive training in the language of education everything from standardized testing to behavioral health and special education.  Many of us are current or former educators ourselves, which means we understand how schools work, how conversations unfold, and what families need in order to feel supported.  Whether helping with parent?teacher conferences, evaluations, or family meetings, our interpreters focus on making sure parents receive clear, accurate information.  Our translators also bring with them familiarity with educational systems from around the world, which allows us to help schools communicate effectively with families from many different backgrounds.

In addition to translation and interpretation, Your Language Connection offers workshops designed to help schools and families connect more easily.  These can include multilingual introductions for parents about how U.S. schools operate, professional development for staff on working with English Learners, or sessions exploring global customs that influence family interactions.  Each workshop can be customized to fit your school or district, depending on the needs of your community.

At the heart of everything we do is the belief that when parents feel informed and welcomed, students benefit.  Teachers and administrators already work incredibly hard to support their students, and we see our role as helping you strengthen those relationships even further.  By partnering with Your Language Connection, you can ensure that every family—no matter their language or background—has the tools and confidence they need to take an active role in their child’s education.  Together, we can help all students and families feel connected, supported, and valued as part of your school community.
